ELEMENTARY TEACHERS
STEM is a relatively new interdisciplinary area for elementary school teachers. To nurture mastery of technological and engineering content as well as training, the Summer STEM Institute offers professional development workshops and resources for elementary school teachers. This session introduce educators to engineering concepts and skills, review the structure and reasoning shaping particular curricular materials, engage participants in curricular activities, and encourage consideration about relevant instructional planning. Practical lessons using common materials will go home with participants. Ready to use lessons that are aligned with the technology Benchmarks of AAAS’s Project 2061 as well as the National Center for Technological Literacy.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS
Professional Development for middle school educators is a priority of the Summer STEM Institute. We offer a week-long workshop that is structured to allow participants to engage in activities focused on technology and engineering, using the core subject areas of science and mathematics to solve problems from the students’ every day world. This workshop will help you introduce students to the world of technology and engineering, as a first step in their becoming technologically literate citizens. New and old materials will be explored as the tools to allow your students to have greater understanding and skill in the STEM fields. Ready to use lessons that are aligned with the technology Benchmarks of AAAS’s Project 2061 as well as the National Center for Technological Literacy. Participants use the engineering design process themselves to solve problems that require the application and integration of STEM concepts.
At the Summer STEM Institute we help teachers hook students on STEM concepts in rigorous inquiry learning – without the need for expensive materials. We specialize in helping elementary and middle school teachers to bring best practice classroom management tools to their professional toolbox.
OUR APPROACH
Because good teaching makes learning relevant and exciting to students, the STEM workshops being offered at The Hockaday School will specialize in instructing teachers on how to engage students in STEM inquiry learning and how to succeed without the need for expensive or elaborate lab facilities. These week-long workshops are designed to introduce elementary and middle school teachers to the world of technology and engineering as a first step in getting the students to become technologically proficient. Through real-world connections, teachers will have the opportunity to see how technology, science, mathematics, and engineering are part of their everyday world.
The professional development and curriculum in each workshop are grounded in the TEKS, for Texas teachers and include research; proven methods for teaching and assessment, as well as using the newest and innovative classroom materials and technologies.
Discussions of Best Practices for the elementary and middle schools will be threads followed throughout the week long workshops.
COLLABORATION
